Celebrate National Motorcycle Week with a Beer on the Side
Butts Brewery take to 3 wheels with Watsonian Squire
Butts Brewery of Hungerford joined in with the fun for
National Motorcycle Week (16-23rd July) by delivering their organic real ale in
a sidecar outfit.
“Riding a bike helps keep me sane,” comments Dave Price of
Butts. “But you can’t bungee an 18 gallon barrel to the pillion seat, so a
sidecar is the perfect solution!”
Butts borrowed the outfit from Watsonian Squire, who have been
making sidecars in the Midlands since 1912. During the heydays of the British
motorcycle industry in the 1950’s Watsonian produced sidecars for many
tradesmen, including milkmen and even AA patrols, but today the Company’s
customers are primarily leisure riders who enjoy the fun, flexibility and
freedom of sidecars.
“There are around 7,500 sidecars in use in the UK,” points out
Watsonian’s Peter Rivers Fletcher. “So you’re guaranteed to draw a crowd
wherever you go, and that’s good news for any small business looking to promote
itself.”
Based near the Cotswold market town of Moreton-in-Marsh,
Watsonian has survived changing trends to emerge as one of barely a dozen major
sidecar manufacturers in the World. They have a full order book with 60% of
production going overseas. The outfit being tested by Butts is powered by an
1100cc Yamaha DragStar with a Watsonian GP700 sidecar that will carry one adult
+ child or an 18 gallon barrel of beer in comfort. It sells for approximately
£11,000 on the road (including the bike but not the beer).
The number of independent brewers has increased by 29% since
2002, brewing around 2,500 different ales in total. Butts is one of only a
handful of totally dedicated Organic breweries in the UK, producing
approximately 7,200 pints of award winning cask and bottle conditioned ales
every week.
“There are some things that the British still do best,” says Dave. “Brewing real
ale and building sidecars both fall into that category.”
